Infant Weaning Foods: How to Prepare Rich Homemade Infant Formula





Infants grow faster than we envisage and breastfeeding alone cannot meet the nutritional requirement of a child in the first and second year. When a child is about four months of age, the child needs supplementary feeding and this is the point where the low cost homemade foods with adequate nutrients and energy are introduced to compliment with breastmilk.           
Infant weaning foods are carefully formulated to equate a balanced nutrition for babies and the raw materials like the soya beans and crayfish are high in protein and energy nutrition. These ingredients are produce from our locally available farm produce like corn, millet, soya beans, plantain and groundnuts, they easy to prepare.

Process
  • Measure the quantity of raw material needed 
  • Pick out stones from the millet and soya beans
  • Wash both the millet and soya beans clean
  • After washing, dry them
  • Fry the soya beans to reduce bacterial load and the acidity level,
  • Keep stirring it at interval until it turns slightly brown like a roasted groundnut and you can feel its crispy
  • Pour the soya beans into a tray, allow it to cool then  remove the peels or skin
  • You can use your kitchen blender, hand blender by adjusting it so that it will be loose or take them to the mill - sieve to remove the chaff neatly.
  • Tighten your blender to grind them (soya beans, millet and crayfish) to powder or use the commercial mills to grind but make sure their engine is very neat.
  • Store them in an air-tight container

    1. It depends on your baby's age, infant generally do not easily digest wet soya beans. It is best given to them after it has been fried and grounded to powder because frying reduces the acid level contained in it.

    1. It is an awesome idea to mix them but the "soya beans must be fried" before taking it to the mill for grinding to reduce the acidity level so that your baby can easily digest it

    1. Yes you can. groundnut is rich in nutrients such as Protein, Potassium, Vitamin B-6, Iron, Magnesium and Carbohydrate for energy. it also acts as a dietary fiber which helps your baby's bowel movement for easy evacuation - this helps avert pile in infants.

Hi Grace, after you can grind other things like groundnut and the rest dry to make it easy for you; expecially in a situation where you hardly have light to refrigerate the akamu (millet, guinea corn or maize).   11. I don't still understand the process.is it that after removing the shaft of the soyabean ,you blend all together.i mean wet
    Then when u want to cook it ,do u prepare it like normal way u prepare pap?

    1. No. After washing the soya beans and peeling off its back, dry it , after drying, you fry the soya beans before grinding both the soya beans, millet and crayfish until it becomes "very very smooth". After which you can cook it on fire by preparing it it like pap.

    1. You can rinse it if want but as long as you have an oven where you can easily dry it but first of all carefully pick out dirts and shells from the crayfish before grinding. Rnsing is optional since you will still boil it
