Breastfeeding: Common Breastfeeding Problems and the Solutions

There are some common problems associated with breast feeding, like engorged breast, cracked nipple, blocked ducts and low milk. Blocked Ducts

Avoid wearing a tight bra but If your breasts still feels full after breastfeeding your baby or try express some milk with a breast pump to relieve the fullness and pain or take paracetamol.
Take a warm shower or use warm water and dab your breast using a towel before a feed to enable the breast-milk flow, this will make you feel more relieved.

Cracked Nipples

If you experience any cracks or bleeding on your nipple, apply purified lanolin “on the nipple” so that it will heal quickly.
Clean gently with ordinary water, do not use soap. Ensure you change your often after every feed.

The softer a babies sucking motion, the less your chance of having a cracked nipple, breastfeed your baby regularly.

How to Care For Your Nipple

Milk can soothe your nipples and it's not a bad idea to allow the milk dry naturally on your nipple.

  • Use bra pads If your breasts leak between feedings,
  • Allow your nipples to dry before dressing up 
  • Wear a cotton bra so that air can circulate.
  • When you bathe, minimize the amount of soap you apply on your nipples. 
  • Apply purified lanolin on dry or cracked nipples after each feeding to retain moisture.

Thrush Infection During Breast Feeding

If your nipple becomes sore, after breastfeeding for a while, there is a possibility you have been infection with thrush. Consult your Pharmacist or physician to avoid infecting your baby with thrush. But if your baby is the one infected with thrush in the mouth, check with your physician for treatment to avoid further complication.

Engorgement of the Breast

When the breast is engorged, it becomes hard and heavy. Your baby finds it difficult to suck very well making it difficult for baby to clasp on to the breast for better suction.
The more often you breastfeed or express breast milk softens the breast and reduces engorgement thereby increasing milk supply.

Low Breast Milk Supply

After delivery, you are given some briefs on the basics of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is introduced as an essential natural baby infant nutrition formula that acts as antibodies that help your baby fight against viruses and bacteria.

How to Increase Your Milk Supply while Breast Feeding

Be sure to take enough fluid such as water or coconut water to help your body produce enough milk for your baby and breast feed your baby often.

  2. I recommend you taking plenty of water, this will help you produce more breastmilk, also drink coconut water if you can lay your hands on it. My sister in-law had same problem and it really worked for her. Ensure you rest well, because stress can cut down milk production. Lastly, try expressing or breast-feeding more often daily to avoid slowing down your milk flow,
