Baby Carrier: How to Choose the Right Baby Carrier to Buy (Things to Consider)

These days we are seeing many young mothers embrace the baby carriers - it's comfortable and convenient for today's busy moms. With so many brands and models in the market, for a new parent, it's hard to find the right baby carrier. So, in this post, you will discover the 11 things to look out for when choosing a baby carrier. After reading this article, you will no longer be confused about which baby carrier type or brand is the best for you and your little one. Read on.

1. Type of Baby Carrier
All carriers are not the same, and the type you buy would depend on a few factors such as your baby's age, its weight and your own body.

2. Nursing Friendly
If you plan to breastfeed your baby while carrying him/her, the best type of carriers that make this possible are baby wraps and slings.

3. Baby's Safety
Baby’s safety is the first thing that comes to mind when buying a baby carrier. The baby ought to feel secure and comfortable in any carrying position.

4. Parent's Comfort
Ensure you buy a carrier with adjustable straps, well-padded shoulder straps to avoid over weight on your shoulders and to avoid pains on your back and neck, wide enough for your baby to fit in. If you would be sharing a carrier with your nanny or others, make sure to adjust the straps.

5. Baby's Comfort
Be sure that the carrier you choose will not be too loose or too tight on your baby's thighs. A baby can easily fall through a loose carrier, and if a carrier is too tight, it would restrict your baby's movement. Buying a carrier with soft fabric (if slings or baby wrap) or a padded headrest will ensure that your baby is comfortable whenever s/he ever falls asleep in the carrier.

6. How Strong the Carrier
The only way to know how strong a baby carrier is is to try before buying, or ask another parent. Before using your baby carrier, confirm that all the belts and buckles are strong and working properly, and that the seat and straps will hold your baby firm without any risk to the child slipping through.

7. Ease of Use
Before buying, confirm that the carrier you have in mind is easy to wear on and put off. Test-run the baby carrier by carrying a baby-doll or a packet of Semovita/ flour a in it, and then try belting and buckling it, to see how the fittings work, how comfortable it is, as well as how the weight (you carry) is distributed.

8. Easy of Cleaning
Babies are a messy business, and so it's a good idea to choose carriers that have easy-to-wash fabrics, and not-too-bright colours (bright colours are quick to show stains).

9. How Long You Plan to Carry Your Baby
How long you would be keeping your baby in the carrier will determine what brand/ model of carrier that will suit you. Some are designed to be easier on the Parent - some baby carriers are very uncomfortable when you carry your baby in it and trek a long distance. However, some are designed to distribute baby weight across your shoulders and waist, making them better for long treks. You just have to choose the one that suits your need.

10. Baby's Size, Weight and Age
Every manufacturer specifies a weight and age limit as a guide for parents to guide parents in choosing the right baby carriers. Most of carriers are designed to be used to carry newborns up to a certain specified age or weight - check the manual (most are between birth and age 4).

11. Carrying Positions
Every parent has a way they feel comfortable carrying a baby - some prefer to hold a baby on the back; some prefer carrying a baby on their chest/ front; others prefer holding a baby on their hip/ side. Some baby carriers are designed to hold a baby in all of those positions. So, when buying a baby carrier, ensure to buy one that will allow you to carry your baby in the same way you naturally do.

That's all from us on buying tips for choosing a good baby carrier. Hope you found them helpful. If you enjoyed this post, please Facebook and tweet it to your friends.
